Things That Should Not End Up On Your Dryer

There is no denying that dryers provide the ultimate convenience. As we are always busy, we do not have the time to wait for the laundry to dry. Instead, we have to make sure that it is done easily and in the least amount of time.

If you have a dryer at home and want to make sure that it lasts a long time, you need to know that there are certain things that should never end up on the dryer. The dryer does not cater to every type of clothing or accessory. Instead, these items should be air-dried. It will also help you conserve energy and get more out of your dryer. Bras

One of the things that should never make their way into the dryer is a bra. The reason for this is that bras use elastic and spandex for stretching and providing support. The high temperature of the dryer will break down such material and ruin the shape of the bra. Therefore, it is best that you wash your bras correctly and leave them to air-dry. It will help ensure that they maintain their shape. 

Backpacks and Reusable Shopping Bags

Another item that you cannot place in the dryer includes backpacks and reusable shopping bags. The same goes for lunch bags. When you think about the things that make their way into the backpacks, reusable shopping bags, and lunch bags, it is obvious for you to want to wash and clean them regularly. However, it does not mean that you can place these things in the clothes dryer unless each of these are made using cotton. The heat produced by the dryer will cause the outer materials to warp, shrink, and melt. To protect the inner structure of insulated bags, you must avoid placing them in the dryer. 

Leather, Faux Leather, and Suede

The worst mistake that you can make is placing any type of leather in the clothes dryer. Even if you get caught in a downpour, you cannot leave the leather in the dryer. The heat will crack or distort the fabric. Simply leave the wet leather items to air-dry. However, do not place them under direct sunlight or near heat. 

Silk and Delicate Fabrics

The next thing that should not be placed in the dryer is silk and delicate fabrics. The thing about fabrics like silk, sheer, and lace is that they do not belong in the dryer. It produces high heat that causes wrinkles that are close to impossible to get rid of. The last thing you want is a hole in the fabric. 

Activewear and Swimwear

Similar to lingerie, activewear is made using high-tech, synthetic fiber that supports muscles and wicks away moisture when you work out. It is crucial that you avoid using the dryer as it would prevent these garments from holding their wicking qualities and shape. Hence, you must stick with air-drying after you have washed them.  As to swimwear, they must be washed every time you wear it. It will help ensure that the chlorine, salt, sand, sunscreen oils, and body soil are removed from the swimwear. Once you wash it, your only option is to air-dry it. Dryers produce heat that leads to the fabrics distorting.

Tennis Shoes

Tennis shoes also do not belong in the dryer. They are made using leather, simple canvas, and high-tech performance fabrics. Once you have washed athletic shoes, you must skip the dryer. The high heat will lead to the soles separating and materials becoming distorted. Tennis shoes must air-dry for a minimum of 24 hours before you can put them on again. If you do not have a lot of time, you should stuff your shoes with newspaper to ensure that they soak up the moisture and speed up the drying process.

Sweaters

Knitted yarns are made for using sweaters. If you wash them incorrectly, they would lose their shape. It is best that you do not toss sweaters in the hot dryer. The heat causes natural or human-made fibers to stretch and shrink. It only increases pilling. Since it is impossible for a synthetic fiber sweater to return to its original shape, you cannot place it in the dryer. 

Wool Clothes

Wool clothing can be either hand washed or tossed in the washer. But it cannot be thrown in the dryer. As wool is a natural fiber made from goats and sheep and has an outer layer that contains scales, it would shrink when subjected to high heat. If the scales interlock, it would be almost impossible for the fabric to return to its former glory.

Chemically Stained and Oily Fabrics

Finally, you should also avoid placing chemically stained and oily fabrics in the dryer. The heat from the dryer would lead to the residual oils in the fabric to start a fire through combustion. Besides this, oily materials only end up transferring onto dryer surfaces. Thus, air-dry such fabrics.
